Seca Medical Scales

Seca approached Nectar with the goal of creating a medical-grade, robust scale for the US market. Nectar visited hospitals to get a comprehensive understanding of how scales were used and what the biggest challenges were in the hospital environment. Nectar evaluated the competitors and determined the PROs and CONs for each model. Based on our findings, Nectar came up with an action plan for how to achieve success in the US market.

Finding what was missing

Nectar determined that the key element that was missing from all of the competitors was flexibility. Every hospital is set up differently, and floor space is usually at a premium. Nectar’s objective quickly became to design a medical scale that is easily accessible by the nurse and the patient no matter where it is placed in the hospital.

Modular approach

Nectar designed a medical scale that allows the user interface to be mounted on either side of the measuring rod. This allows the hospital to determine which setup best meets their needs, and lets them configure the system in the way that best fits their space.

Frequently the nurses are unable to read the screen when the patient is standing on the scale because it is tucked away in the corner of the room. Nectar created a solution that is optimized for flexibility, and accommodates hospital needs in the US.

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Adam Marten has worked in the aerospace and consumer products industries since 2006 with lead engineering experience in conceptual design, product development, analysis and performance qualification testing. Adam has experience leading a range of technical projects, including multiple structural analyses for military and aerospace applications. Stephanie Rodriguez is a highly experienced administrative professional with over 10 years of expertise across a diverse range of industries, including contract manufacturing, financial and wealth management, and the medical field. Jonathan at his core is a Human Factors Engineer with his M.S. in Human Factors and Minor in Sociology from California State University of Long Beach. At Nectar, Jonathan is responsible for managing and maintaining the company’s ISO 13485 Quality Management System keeping in compliance with US and international regulations for product development. Jonathan’s role ensures each department is in compliance every step of the design process, making him a critical Nectar team member. Jonathan’s Human Factors background also allows him to aid in user research, feedback sessions, usability evaluations, and formative studies such as risks assessments. When he’s not in the office, Jonathan enjoys film photography, and reading.
