Nuvasive sought Nectar Product Development to help create a revolutionary medical device for patients with Limb Length Discrepancy (LLD). This device is comprised of an intramedullary nail, locking screws, and reusable instruments that is used with an External Remote Controller (ERC) to non-invasively lengthen the femur and tibia.
The ERC project was presented to Nectar with the requirements of being functional, comfortable for the user, and non-threatening for children to use. Nectar seamlessly and effectively created an innovative design for the ERC that considers all user types.
Nectar’s Industrial Design and User Experience teams worked closely to bring the ERC to life. A unique variety of use cases in combination with a challenging form factor resulted in a distinct process for our design team to explore concepts, and ultimately reach the best design. By taking a user- centered design approach, we quickly understood workflows, which translated to a concept that was easy to use for adults and children. This unique device integrated Nectar’s Industrial Design and User Experience teams to produce an intuitive and ergonomic medical device.
Focused on design and development of surgical devices, Nuvasive requires reliability and user- centered design for all their products. Nectar provided user experience insight and analysis, which helped our team produce the ERC.
The next generation ERC, which Nectar designed to be ergonomic and easy to operate, can be used alone or with the help of an administer. The human factors and contextual research performed, contributed to the success of an intuitive non- invasive limp lengthening device
